About this Event
About this event
Join us on a psychogeological* adventure, exploring 4.6 billion years of life on earth on a 4.6km walk in North London.
We’ll use this journey to explore ‘deep time’, walking 1 million years with every metre. Along the way, we’ll pause to consider some of the key moments of earth’s history – from the formation of the earth, to the evolution of bacteria and the species we know today — and our relationship with it, in experiential, playful and meditative ways.
Our route will mainly follow the Parkland Walk, a former railway line that now hosts London’s longest linear nature reserve. We’ll meet in Finsbury Park, and end our journey in a secluded spot in Highgate Woods.
* “psychogeology” is a term used by science fiction author Kim Stanley-Robinson to describe the way the places we are in, can shape the ways we think.
Who is this for?
- Newcomers to the concepts of Deep Time
- People looking to connect with nature and other people in an urban setting
- Anyone interested in how our relationship with nature can inspire wider social change
What are the practical requirements?
We will meet at Finsbury Park café, which is on the western side of the park by the boating lake. Our walk will begin at 10am, so please plan to arrive slightly ahead of schedule. Food, drinks and toilets are available at the café.
The walk will take place mainly in the context of an urban nature reserve. The Parkland Walk itself is largely flat, but there are some small steep hills when we reach Highgate. Please wear comfortable shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring water/snacks. There are a couple of places we can stop for a toilet break along the way.
We’ll end our journey in Queens Wood, an urban woodland in Highgate. From there, it is a short walk to Highgate tube station.
We would welcome any questions or suggestions you might have about making this experience accessible to your needs.
What is a Deep Time Walk?
The Deep Time Walk concept was co-created by Stephan Harding and Sergio Maraschin at Schumacher College.
The not-for-profit Deep Time Walk Project has made materials available that enable the Deep Time Walk concept to be experienced and spread across the world. These resources include the gift-economy Deep Time Walk App (available for iOS and Android), Deep Time Cards, Deep Time Line and Deep Time Script.
Who are your hosts?
