The grey-headed flying-fox is one of the world’s largest flying mammals, and a classic sight on Melbourne summer evenings.
Join Lawrence Pope, founder and spokesperson for Friends of Bats & Bushcare Inc, for a wide-ranging and myth-busting discussion on the incredible Grey-headed Flying-foxes who share our city, and how to make our gardens safe for bat visitors.
Sometimes, using home-made garden nets to protect your trees and crops can inadvertendly harm local wildlife.
Stick around after the talk to swap your old garden netting for a new, compliant one.
To check if your net is suitable, try poking a finger through the mesh. If it passes through, it’s too big and shouldn’t be used.
If you participated in the last net swap, please allow other Yarra residents to access the limited number of new nets.
• Bring proof of address - an ID or a recent rates notice will be required to prove that you are a Yarra resident.
• Surrendered illegal netting will be collected and recycled via the project partner UPPAREL.
There are two net sizes available:
• Small size net: 1.2m x 1.2m x 1.8m. This is most suitable for trees in pots and planters
• Large size net: 2.4m x 2.8m. This is more suitable for a small to medium fruit tree.
