About this Event
George Washington and Faith
What Do We Know, Why Does It Matter, Why Should I Care?
A special national conversation presented by the George Washington Society — live from the George Washington Inn and livestreamed worldwide.
What did George Washington actually believe about God, faith, Providence, religion, and morality?
How much can we really know from the historical record?
Did Washington's faith influence his character, leadership, and understanding of the new American republic?
And more than two centuries later—why should any of this matter to us?
On October 19, 2026—the 245th anniversary of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown and the end of the American Revolution—the nonprofit George Washington Society will bring together an extraordinary panel of nationally recognized scholars, historians, and commentators for a thoughtful examination of one of the most fascinating and debated dimensions of the life of the Father of Our Country.
THE PANEL
Michael Medved — Moderator
Nationally known bestselling author, historian, broadcaster, and cultural commentator.
Mark David Hall, PhD
Professor of Government at Regent University and one of the nation's leading scholars on religion and America's Founding.
Robert P. George, PhD
McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University and internationally recognized scholar of constitutional law, political philosophy, and religion in public life.
Paul Kengor, PhD
Professor of Political Science at Grove City College, author, and historian whose work has extensively examined faith, politics, and American history.
General George Washington
Portrayed by one of America's foremost interpreters, reenactors, and scholars of George Washington, His Excellency's participation will bring a unique dimension of living history to the evening.
THREE QUESTIONS. ONE REMARKABLE AMERICAN LIFE.
The evening will unfold around three deceptively simple questions:
WHAT DO WE KNOW?
What does the historical record actually tell us about Washington's faith and religious beliefs?
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Did those beliefs influence Washington's character, leadership, understanding of liberty, and vision for the American experiment?
WHY SHOULD I CARE?
What, if anything, can the life and worldview of George Washington teach Americans nearly 250 years later?
This is not intended to be a sectarian presentation or an exercise in historical mythology. It is an invitation to examine the evidence, hear distinguished scholars engage the questions, encounter Washington through first-person historical interpretation, and reach your own conclusions.
AN EXTRAORDINARY SETTING
The discussion will originate from the George Washington Inn in Port Angeles, Washington, an iconic replica of Washington's Mount Vernon overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the headquarters of the nonprofit George Washington Society.
Approximately 70 guests will experience the program in person, while viewers throughout the United States and around the world will be invited to participate through a free livestream.
FREE TO EVERYONE
There is no charge to attend in person.
