April 1984. London’s bomb sites have never been cleared. People go to work past the ruins, queue for necessities and walk beneath posters bearing the face of Big Brother. The Party tells them that life has never been better.
Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, altering old newspapers so the Party’s account of yesterday is always correct. He knows how easily a fact can be made to disappear. He does it for a living.
Then Winston begins to keep a diary. He falls in love with Julia. In a country where even memory is subject to correction, these private acts give him something of his own.
The Party will not settle for his obedience. It intends to leave him with no thought, judgment or love beyond its reach.
The Grove’s in-house company presents a new stage adaptation of Orwell’s 1984, tracing the Party’s attempt to destroy one man’s freedom to think for himself.
