Understanding command words - Learn how to answer questions based on the command. Uncover the hidden components that examiners will look forAbout this Event
Many students lose marks in science exams not because they don’t know the content, but because they answer a different question from the one being asked. This masterclass shows students how to read the command word, work out exactly what the examiner wants, and shape their answer to match.
What we’ll cover
- What the most common command words mean, including state, give, describe, explain, compare, suggest, calculate, evaluate and justify
- How the command word changes the answer: a short fact for one, a reason with a “because” for another, a balanced judgement for another
- How to match the length and detail of an answer to the marks available
- Common mistakes, such as describing when the question asks for an explanation
- Worked examples, followed by students trying exam-style questions themselves, with feedback
By the end, students will be able to
- Spot the command word and say what type of answer it needs
- Structure answers that match what the mark scheme rewards
- Avoid giving the right science in the wrong form
