Gargoyle & Grotesque Sculpture Workshop
Join local artist Helen McCormick for a relaxed, creative day at The Walronds. Unleash your imagination as you craft a unique gargoyle or grotesque sculpture using traditional hand-building techniques and terracotta clay.
About the Workshop
This workshop offers a friendly, supportive space to connect with others while exploring your creativity. I will guide you step-by-step through the process of sculpting your own gargoyle or grotesque.No prior experience is necessary—whether you are a complete beginner or looking to develop your skills, this day is all about having a go, learning something new, and having fun. We will be working with terracotta clay, which is perfect for these characterful sculptures and ages beautifully when placed outdoors.
What’s Included
- All terracotta clay, tools, and equipment.
- Tea and coffee provided throughout the morning.
- Professional kiln firing of your finished piece.
What to Bring
- An apron and old clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty.
- (Optional) Your own design ideas or inspiration!
The Firing Process & Collection
After the workshop, I will take your sculpture to my studio to be kiln-fired. These sculptures are left unglazed, allowing the natural terracotta to develop a beautiful patina in your garden over time.
- Collection: Your work will be ready to collect from The Walronds approximately 6 weeks after the workshop. I will contact you with specific dates and times—please ensure I have your correct email address for updates.
- Please note: Finished work can be stored for up to 6 months before being donated to charity.
Refund & Cancellation Policy
I understand that plans can change, but as a small micro business (only me), last-minute cancellations are difficult to fill.
My policy is as follows:
- 14 days or more before the event: Full refund of the ticket price provided.
- 7 to 13 days before the event: Full refund ONLY if I am able to fill your space (minus the booking fee) OR a ticket transfer to a future workshop of the same value.
- 3 to 7 days before the event: 75% refund of the ticket price ONLY if I am able to fill your space (minus the booking fee). No ticket transfers.
- 2 days (48 hours) before the event: 50% refund of the ticket price ONLY if I am able to fill your space (minus the booking fee). No ticket transfers.
- Less than 48 hours or No-shows: No refunds or transfers can be offered.
If I have to cancel the workshop for any reason, you will receive a full refund.
Location & Parking
Venue: The Walronds, Cullompton.
FREE Parking: Available at the rear of the building.
- Directions: Turn up Tiverton Road from the High Street, then turn left onto Shortlands Lane (just before the fire station). Follow the narrow lane, turn left at the car park sign, and go through the gate.

About Helen McCormick
I have been creating objects from clay for over 30 years and still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about sharing my skills and experience with others, whether it's your first time touching clay or you're looking to develop further. I am a fully qualified Art and Design teacher with a Master’s degree in Ceramics and hold an enhanced DBS check.
