Gamlárshlaup ÍR er skemmtileg blanda af keppnishlaupi, áramótaskemmtun og fjölskyldusamveru þar sem einstaklingar með ólík markmið og bakgrunn koma saman. Gleðin er ávallt við völd í Gamlárshlaupi ÍR, hvernig sem viðrar, en auk hefðbundinna keppnisbúninga mæta fjölmargir til leiks íklæddir grímubúningum.
Á meðan sumir leggja kapp á að bæta sinn besta tíma á hraðri og flatri braut þá berjast aðrir um um að hljóta verðlaun fyrir frumlegasta búninginn eða einfaldlega hafa gaman af.

Since 1976, ÍR Track and Field Club has seen out the year with its New Year’s Eve 10K. For half a century it has been one of Iceland’s best-loved running traditions, and a favourite way to say goodbye to the old year.
At noon on December 31st, the start gun fires on Sæbraut outside Harpa Concert Hall. The fast, flat, AIMS-certified course follows the ocean east past the Sun Voyager sculpture toward Sundahöfn harbour, then turns back to finish at Harpa. On a clear day you’ll run with Mount Esja across the bay.
Elite athletes chasing a last personal best of the year line up next to recreational runners of all ages. Some of the field is dressed as Santas, superheroes and everything in between. Costumes are a big part of the fun, and there’s a special prize for the most unique outfit. There’s also a 3 km fun run for anyone who wants a shorter route to the party.
After the race, warm up inside Harpa for the prize ceremony and refreshments. Then join the rest of Reykjavík for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve. Neighbourhood bonfires are lit across the city, and at midnight the sky fills with one of the world’s most spectacular fireworks celebrations, set off by the people of Reykjavík themselves.
