Saturday, October 10th at 3pm in the upper atrium of the Arts Center of Mississippi, Dr. Elise Smith, professor emeritus of Art History at Millsaps College, will present a gallery talk based on her research on Mildred Wolfe’s paintings of the property surrounding her home and studio, positioning it in conversation with other Southern women landscape painters of her era. Following her talk, enjoy the exhibition where a few of the works she will discuss are on display!Dr. Smith received her M.A. from Vanderbilt and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, both in art history, and she is now retired after 37 years at Millsaps College. Her first two books were on individual artists, Lucas van Leyden and Evelyn De Morgan; the next two, co-authored with a literary scholar at the University of Florida, Judith Page, explore the garden as a personal and professional space for British artists and writers. This past Spring, she and her co-author released a new book focused on gardening women in the American South, 1870-1970.
