Futuring a Garden of Beehives at LCF

LCF used to have beehives in 2017. Could we have honeybees again? Could they live in an accessible and shared micro garden?
About this Event

In this hands-on workshop you will explore ideas on what a student+staff-led micro garden with beehives might look like at LCF, and how it could feel.

Lets insist that the return of a shared garden would benefit our lives and restore an approachable relationship to herbs, plants, and bees.

We will collectively interrogate these questions:

  1. Where will the micro garden and beehive be placed? Whats its design? What might it need to contain?
  2. What might the beehive look like? Whats it form? How might we create a supportive future for bees?
  3. How might the micro garden and beehives benefit students, staff, and the broader environment? Growing plants is a practice of stewardship, what does it add?

Gardening and care for beehives could offer a way to repair and restore a tangible connection with the living worlds of other beings. Developing a micro garden may seem modest in scale, yet it offers a quietly radical, hands-on approach to realigning us with seasonal cycles, production processes, and tactile methods of care.

This workshop is led by Greg Orrom Swan, a practicing artist and designer; who holds permanent lectureship at LCF and LCC. His multidisciplinary practice looks critically at how cycles of biology, geology, and techno capitalism interplay through human and more-than-human ways. Previously co-founding a globally-funded BioDesign research company within the RCA looking at using flies for pollination in agriculture to support bee populations.

Working across many creative fields such as visual communication, set design, creative direction, video, tv. Selected exhibitions at MoMA, London Design Festival, CPH:DOX, Dokuchaev Soil Museum, European Capital of Culture 2024.

This workshop is open to students and staff across the University of the Arts London. It will take place on the London College of Fashion campus.
