Lesson: Blues Basics for Fusion Dancers

Blues was the original base style that modern fusion drew on and grew from. More than just another ballroom style, blues originated in Black culture in the 1930s and 1940s, which strongly influenced how it was danced then and how to make it look and feel good today. Over the next few months, we'll have several lessons oriented toward bringing blues into Orlando's fusion scene, so come learn the basics this month!
What's fusion? It's improvised partner dance!
Take moody music, many different dance styles, and an inclusive and friendly group, mix, and invent your own dance to fit the music and your partner. Come to the lesson to find out more!
Fusion makes the most sense to folks who know at least one dance style well, but anyone is welcome who would respect our community.
We swap partners for each dance, so come alone or bring friends!

The lesson will use the front end of the ballroom during the social.
If you're new to partner dancing, let us know when you arrive. We can teach you enough basics to enjoy the dance and the community.

Our own DJ Whirlwind (Tasha Rice) returns! Tasha's introduction to partner dancing was by luck at a bus stop. Since then, she’s studied many styles, though fusion is her truest love. Re-introducing herself as DJ Whirlwind, she will bring you songs from far corners of the world, as well creative takes on the songs you already love. Let the music carry you away as you spend the night vacationing right here on the dance floor.
April Choi is a movement artist and 23-time Guinness World Record holder who translates 30 years of dance experience into controlled yet fluid precision. By breaking down body mechanics research to the fusion dance scene, she provides dancers with a logical, high-performance blueprint for elegant frame communication.
Bethany Byrnes is a veteran dance instructor with 15 years of experience teaching and performing across the United States. A masterful communicator, she specializes in translating complex movement into clear, actionable guidance for her students. Her unique approach to fusion dancing is informed by 30 years of dressage and horse riding, utilizing subtle, non-verbal cues to encourage fluid, responsive movement between partners.
