Autumn is peak mushroom season, and when conditions allow, we’ll spend time observing and identifying a variety of fungi in their natural habitat. You’ll learn how to recognise key features, understand habitats, and begin to group mushrooms into their main families. If recent weather hasn’t produced many mushrooms on the day, we’ll provide fresh specimens to ensure there is still plenty to study. This guarantees a valuable learning experience regardless of conditions.
This course is strictly educational—there will be no foraging for consumption and no food or tasting samples provided. The focus is entirely on observation, identification, and understanding.
What You’ll Learn
Safe and responsible approaches to studying wild fungi
Laws and guidelines around mushroom collecting
How to identify key mushroom families and recognise defining characteristics
Understanding mushroom structures, life cycles, and ecological roles
How to process and document your finds for learning (e.g. notes, photos, spore prints)
How to distinguish potentially dangerous species from non-harmful ones
The emphasis is on building knowledge and confidence in identification, rather than collecting or eating.
Who It’s For
Ideal for beginners, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in fungi. No previous experience is needed—just curiosity and suitable outdoor clothing.
