This fall, Keen School of Music is offering Fundamentals of Jazz: History, Culture & Performance, a 4-week educational series taught by Ryder Smith for anyone who wants to take a deeper look at the music, history, and culture behind one of America’s most influential genres.Throughout the course, students will explore the major eras and subgenres of Jazz, including big band, bebop, cool jazz, and fusion, while learning about the artists who helped define them, such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, and more.
We’ll look at how each era influenced the next, what gives each style its distinct sound, and how Jazz developed its own musical language over time.
For musicians, the class will also introduce Jazz theory, standards, improvisation, soloing, arrangement, and group performance concepts. For non-musicians, no performance background is required. This class is also a great fit for anyone who simply loves Jazz and wants to better understand what they are hearing.
