A six-hour hands-on introduction to the fundamental techniques and knowledge you need to sew with confidence.
About this Event

This bootcamp is designed primarily for people who are brand new to sewing or still learning the basics, including self-taught sewists who have some experience but feel they are missing important fundamentals.

It is also designed as preparation for the Tailoring Academy, but everyone with basic sewing experience is welcome.

Session 1 — Sewing Machine & Fabric Fundamentals

We will spend the first three hours building a strong technical foundation through demonstration and hands-on practice.

We’ll begin with the sewing machine itself — understanding the different types of machines and how they work before moving into the actual sewing techniques.

You will learn:

  • Major sewing machines types and how they differ
  • How to thread the upper thread — three steps to follow
  • How to thread the bobbin thread — three steps to follow
  • How to wind the bobbin correctly — three rules for correct winding
  • How to begin a seam correctly — three steps to avoid messing up or breaking threads
  • How to finish a seam correctly — three steps to follow
  • How to use reverse stitching correctly
  • Five criteria for quality stitching — how to recognize problems, what can cause them, and how to prevent or correct them
  • Four professional rules for straight stitching for clean, effortless stitching on different fabrics and seams
  • Three steps for making a turn in a seam correctly
  • Three important pinning rules for accurate and controlled sewing
  • How to work with fraying edges using both a regular sewing machine and an overlock/serger
  • Thread trimming and other finishing techniques
  • Straight stitching and topstitching techniques, including working with thicker threads commonly used for denim and other garments

We will also cover the essential fabric knowledge needed for sewing and alterations:

  • Woven fabric construction, warp and weft, selvage, grainline, fabric direction, right and wrong sides, and correct fabric preparation before cutting and sewing.

Essential Pressing & Ironing Techniques. Pressing is an essential part of sewing production. You will learn the fundamentals of professional pressing and how to use it throughout construction.

  • Correct ironing settings for different materials, correct techniques for pressing different seams, how to control fabric position, pressure, and tension while pressing, how pressing affects the final shape, accuracy, and appearance of a garment or project
  • How to use the pressing and ironing tools used in ateliers and sewing studios to achieve professional results

30-minute break - bring your own lunch or grab food in the neighborhood on your 30 minute break

Session 2 — Pattern Reading, Cutting & Construction

In the second three-hour session, we will apply the fundamentals to a small sewing project.

You will learn:

  • How to read a basic pattern and understand its markings
  • How pattern lines and fabric direction correlate
  • How to correctly position a pattern on fabric
  • How to identify grainline, notches, and control points — and why they are important
  • How to recognize and avoid common mistakes when pattern markings are not followed
  • Correct fabric preparation and cutting techniques
  • Correct pinning and sewing techniques
  • Overlocking and raw-edge finishing
  • How to make a basic double-fold hem
  • Topstitching techniques and different approaches to clean, even topstitching
  • Correct thread trimming
  • Pressing and ironing throughout construction and final finishing

We will use these techniques to construct a simple tote bag, using fabric available at the bootcamp and a choice of webbing for the handles. We will also look at how handle length can be adjusted in relation to the wearer’s height and intended use.

The project brings everything together: pattern reading, fabric preparation, cutting techniques, sewing, overlocking, hemming, topstitching, pressing, and finishing.

What you will leave with

By the end of the bootcamp, you will have practiced the complete process from preparing the sewing machine and fabric, reading a pattern, cutting, sewing, finishing, and pressing.

No previous formal sewing education is required. You simply need a willingness to learn, practice, and get your hands on the machine.

See you at the Bootcamp!
