This is not a typical airport tour. It is a hands-on career exploration of Huntsville International Airport, with access to areas the general public does not get to see and conversations with industry professionals such as pilots, TSA officials, and Airframe and Powerplant technicians. Group size is limited so participants can have a more personal experience. Plan on a busy, active day of walking and riding between stops, and pack a picnic lunch.
What explorers may learn and see: Stops can vary. The areas listed below are what we expect to see, but a stop may change if that department is busy, short-staffed, or closed that day. Outdoor aircraft viewing also depends on the weather. If it rains, some outdoor stops may be limited and replaced with other indoor areas.
• Airport layout, ground handling, and luggage handling
• Explore careers and talk to professionals in the industry such as mechanics, fueling, pilots, TSA, airport personnel, cargo jobs, and control tower staff
• See inside the Control Tower and Cargo Departments
• Explore TSA behind the scenes
• View and see up close custom-built airplanes
• Watch and learn about airplanes being maintained
• A jet walkaround and learn the main parts of an airplane
• Explore the airport ramps
• Learn the four forces of flight and the three main axes of flight: pitch, yaw, and roll
• Possible extras such as flight simulators or the airport fire station if another area is unavailable
Who should come:
Best for ages 10–17. This tour covers more advanced aviation topics, includes extended sitting, walking, and standing, and runs long, so it is designed for that age range. Slightly younger siblings or participants are welcome if parents can keep them from becoming a distraction—able to sit, walk, and stand for long periods, and quietly engaged or entertained so the older kids can stay focused. Please note that the discussion is geared toward ages 10–17.
Please note:
• Only U.S. citizens may attend. This field trip includes federal agencies.
• We kindly request one chaperone per family. Chaperone seating is very limited.
• Be flexible. The day’s route depends on weather and department availability.
• Wear weather appropriate clothing and comfortable closed toed shoes recommended.
• More detailed directions, instructions, and waivers will be emailed about a week before the event.
• Fees go to the ticketing platform, programming and FlyQuest.
• Bring a sack lunch and water for each participant.
Cancellation policy:
There is a 5-day cancellation window. For this December 4 event, you may cancel through November 29 and receive a refund minus ticketing fees.
Bring plenty of curiosity and come lift off with the Explorers Club of North Huntsville for a high-flying look at real airport careers at the Huntsville International Airport.
