What to Expect: This is a carpentry field trip. Kids won’t just watch — they’ll learn by doing pen turning woodworking and by make their very own wooden pen. Each young maker chooses their wood and metal finish, then works through the real sequence: cut the blank on the bandsaw, drill it on the drill press, glue it up, learn lathe safety and operation, turn and sand the wood, finish it, and assemble the pen. Experienced shop trainers stay close the whole time for safety and to teach technique. Trainers will talk through grain, layout, machine safety, and more. Kids leave with the pen they made— which can be a handmade gift just in time to make a perfect Christmas gift for a loved one.
The day also includes an exclusive tour of the Shop’s brand-new facility, with live demonstrations and Q&As as time allows. Kids see a 3D printer, a CNC carving machine (Computer Numerical Control: a computer-controlled tool that automatically carves, cuts, or engraves designs by spinning a cutting bit and moving it along programmed paths), an 80-watt computer-controlled laser engraver/cutter, and traditional woodworking tools.The exact machines and demos can vary.
Ages: This trip is for ages 10 and up. Kids 10 and older use the bandsaw and drill press only with careful supervision from shop technicians and parents. Come ready to learn. Leave with a smile and sawdust on your sleeves and a pen you built like a carpenter. All carpentry tools and safety gear will be provided.
Cost: Explorers Club members get a special club-only rate of $30 per kid, plus a $5 ticketing fee (a $15 savings). This class is designed just for kids in our club. One chaperone per paid child is free. If a chaperone wants to make a pen too, it's $30. Tickets are refundable until 5 days before the event, less the ticketing fee. Want more than one pen? Extra pen-making will be available for additional cost that day for anyone who paid to make a pen and wants to stay longer and make more. Fees for this go to the Shop HSV, supplies, programming and tickting platform.
