A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread

It’s in the air…a shadowy footstep behind a locked door, a stranger’s dead-eyed stare, a glimpsed figure at the edge of an empty lot, a whisper from the other room. Something felt before it is seen. Something not quite right.
There’s an uneasy stillness that settles over a certain strain of horror, where the slightest sound, movement, or suggestion of a presence can become almost unbearable. This October, 7th House presents A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread, a six-film series devoted to movies that unsettle less through shocks than through atmosphere: quiet rooms, empty streets, unfamiliar landscapes, troubled dreams, and the uncanny feeling of being not quite alone…
Spanning the ghostly memory palace of (1980), George A. Romero’s occult portrait of suburban disquiet (1972), the grief-haunted isolation of FULL CIRCLE (aka THE HAUNTING OF JULIA, 1977), the somnambulant seaside nightmare (1973), the rain-lashed Gothic fever dream of (1982), and the hypnotic pastoral dread of (1971), these are films saturated in an atmosphere of gentle dread, where unease lingers long before frights are delivered.
Join us throughout October for six singular excursions into the quieter reaches of horror, where silence draws us closer, shadows beckon, and the waking world slips into nightmare.
As part of their October series A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread, 7th House proudly presents Richard Loncraine’s FULL CIRCLE (aka THE HAUNTING OF JULIA, 1977), an exquisitely eerie and melancholic ghost story in which grief, guilt, and the supernatural seem to drift together through a soft-focus haze of muted terror.
Mia Farrow stars as Julia Lofting, an American living in London whose young daughter dies in a shocking, sudden accident. Emerging from a period of psychiatric care, Julia leaves her controlling husband (Keir Dullea) and the remnants of her former life behind, moving alone into a sprawling old townhouse in hopes of beginning again. But her newfound solitude soon takes on an unsettling character, as inexplicable disturbances and fleeting impressions of another presence leave Julia wondering whether her daughter might somehow still be with her.
Loncraine envelops Julia’s increasingly isolated world in an atmosphere of dreamlike suspension. Gerry Fisher’s soft-focus cinematography gives the townhouse and its shadowy rooms a gauzy air, while Colin Towns’ extraordinary piano/synth score quietly shades the film with melancholic unease. Gracefully understated and unhurried, Full Circle is a patient slow burn, allowing its disturbances to accumulate almost imperceptibly until the familiar spaces of Julia’s new life begin to feel subtly, inexorably uncanny.
An undeservedly overlooked entry in the great cycle of psychologically charged horror of the 1970s, Full Circle finds Farrow returning to the territory of ROSEMARY’S BABY and SECRET CEREMONY, but in a quieter and more inward register. Based on Peter Straub’s Julia, written just before his ’70s horror-lit sensation Ghost Story, the film allows psychological trauma and the uncanny to occupy the same uncertain space, exploring the persistence of guilt through a haunting that seems increasingly difficult to separate from Julia’s own desires. The result is an unusually delicate film whose horror emerges not from spectacle, but from the creeping possibility that what Julia longs to believe may be something darker than she wishes. A longtime 7th House favorite, Full Circle is one of the great hidden gems of the A Kind of Hush series—and not to be missed in a theater.

PARKING
Limited parking is available onsite at PRS in both the front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east), as well as street parking on Griffith Park Blvd. and (after 7 PM) on Los Feliz Blvd. We encourage attendees to consider carpooling, walking or biking to events if possible, and please be considerate of our Los Feliz neighbors when parking.
PRS EVENT POLICIES
- We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
- Events are subject to change without notice, including guest speakers and/or performers.
- We encourage you to arrive at least 30 min. before the scheduled event start time to find parking, enjoy the Bookstore and take your seats.
- Please turn off all mobile devices before the show. Talking and texting are not allowed during the events.
- No filming, audio recording or mobile phone recording of events, screenings, concerts or other programs by audience members is allowed without permission.
- There is no smoking permitted on PRS grounds.
- We strongly encourage guests to wear masks to PRS events to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
- PRS allows Service Animals into the facility under ADA and state guidelines. For further details please visit www.ADA.gov. No animals permitted whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support, under ADA guidelines and CA Health Code.
- Please do not bring outside food or drink into PRS events.
- Weapons are strictly prohibited at PRS events.
