A trove of artifacts has been discovered in a glacier in the Arctic, near the North Pole. You are part of the research team that has been assigned to set up the dig site and excavate the artifacts! The team must first hike to the artifact spot, winding their way through the megalithic complex on a guided tour. Students will learn how to navigate using only the sun as their compass. Once we reach the dig site, students will be challenged to build a shelter out of available materials (rope, cloth, branches, and clips) to protect the team from the elements. Once the area is set up, we will excavate treasures out of blocks of ice using different tools.
Do you have what it takes to brave the Arctic weather? Will you be able to collect the artifacts for the lab?
This special homeschool activity is included with regular admission. The program is geared toward ages 4-12, but open to all! Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and be prepared to be outdoors for about two hours. We will take a short (5-10 minutes) warm-up/snack break inside the visitor center between the walking tour and the STEM challenge.
