Welcome to this special session of the PhD Participatory Research Network, organised in collaboration with Social Engagement to Spur Health (SESH) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine!
This interactive workshop will introduce the newly published Youth co-creation for health: a practical guide, developed to support youth and adults who are committed to strengthening youth participation in health research, programmes, and policies. Youth co-creation is a participatory method in which youth work with others to shape multiple stages of a project, alongside a plan to identify and address power imbalances. It goes beyond a one-off consultation to meaningfully and systematically engage youth at multiple stages of the process. The guide was co-led by youth and informed by conceptual work, a global crowdsourcing challenge, a scoping review, participatory workshops, and an open review process.
The workshop will create a space for PhD students, master’s students, medical students, and other early career researchers to reflect on how youth co-creation can be applied in their own projects, particularly in ways that are inclusive, feasible, and responsive to different youth communities.
What to expect
- An introduction to youth co-creation methods and how the practical guide was developed
- A panel discussion on barriers and facilitators for early career researchers using youth co-creation, including its application in grants, manuscripts, and research design
- Small-group discussions focused on making youth co-creation more inclusive in practice
- Group sharing, collective learning, and final reflections from the session
About the practical guide
Youth co-creation for health: a practical guide provides evidence-informed and practice-oriented strategies for understanding, designing, nurturing, and sustaining youth co-creation in health research, programmes, and policies. It was developed for youth, researchers, programme teams, policymakers, and others seeking to strengthen meaningful youth participation in health-related work. The guide was developed in collaboration with the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), UNICEF, Social Entrepreneurship to Spur Health (SESH), and the Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI).

About our Network
Each month, we meet to explore how participatory values can be embedded in PhD-level research, combining workshops, peer discussions, and guest speakers. Together, we aim to build collective resources, insights, and guidance by PhD students, for PhD students.
Our network is open to all PhD students from any institution, no matter where you are in your participatory research journey!
