Carnegie Hall presents From China to Appalachia on Friday, February 5, 2027, at 7 p.m. Guests are invited to come early for the free Club Carnegie Preshow Reception from 6 – 6:45 p.m. in the Board Room located adjacent to the Hamilton Auditorium. A cash bar and snacks are available.From China to Appalachia unites GRAMMY‑winning American roots duo Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer with Chinese yangqin virtuoso Chao Tian for a vibrant cross‑cultural journey blending traditions, instruments, and stories from around the world. With sounds ranging from yangqin and gourd banjo to ukulele, guitar, dumbek, and mandolin, the trio reimagines Chinese and Appalachian classics alongside global folk selections. Their inventive arrangements—from a jazz‑manouche‑tinged “Dark Eyes” to shared vocals on the lullaby “Nani Wan”—highlight deep musical empathy. Born from jam‑session friendship at the Music Center at Strathmore, the collaboration celebrates music’s power to bridge cultures; collectively, the artists have performed at major venues worldwide. The result is an uplifting, richly textured performance that honors tradition while joyfully expanding its boundaries.
