From 2006 to 2011, Fresh Produce Art Collective brought artists together around a simple idea: make new work, create opportunities, and build a stronger art community. At a time when local galleries were closing, a loose-knit group of Lawrence artists began meeting weekly, turning conversations, collaborations, and a disregard for convention into hundreds of exhibitions, happenings, and unforgettable gatherings.
Founded on an open-door philosophy, Fresh Produce welcomed artists at every stage of their practice, encouraging experimentation, individual expression, and the exhibition of only the freshest, newest work. Shows popped up in alternative spaces throughout the region and beyond, eventually finding a home at DotDotDot ArtSpace, where ambitious exhibitions and unconventional ideas became the norm. More than a collective, FPAC was a catalyst for connection, creative risk-taking, and a new generation of artistic possibility in Lawrence.
Its influence extended well beyond its active years. Former members went on to establish and shape spaces including Lost Art Space, SeedCo Studios, Wonder Fair, and Cider Gallery, helping build the creative infrastructure that continues to support Lawrence artists today. The collective also helped lay the groundwork for the collaborative spirit and independent exhibition culture that define so much of the local art scene.
Nearly two decades after its founding, this reunion brings Fresh Produce artists back together at Cider Gallery to celebrate the work, relationships, and shared history that grew out of those early years. While the collective encouraged artists to keep things fresh, time has given these connections a different kind of meaning. The work has evolved, careers have taken unexpected turns, and the community those artists helped build has continued to grow.
This exhibition is both a look back and a reminder that the energy of Fresh Produce was never just about the art on the walls. It was about showing up, making things happen, creating opportunities for one another, and proving what a community of artists can accomplish together.
Fresh Produce is back.
