An acclaimed songwriter, a remarkable catalog, and an intimate evening at The Blue Door.Freedy Johnston has spent decades writing the kind of songs that stay with you—smart, melodic, beautifully observed stories filled with unforgettable characters and moments.
Originally from Kinsley, Kansas—a small town famously located 1,561 miles from both New York and San Francisco—Freedy eventually made his way to New York City, where he worked as an office temp before landing a record deal with Bar/None Records.
His breakthrough came with 1992’s acclaimed Can You Fly, followed by a move to Elektra Records and the 1994 album This Perfect World, produced by Butch Vig. The record featured Freedy’s best-known song, “Bad Reputation,” and helped earn him Rolling Stone’s Songwriter of the Year honor for 1994.
His music has also found its way onto the big screen, with songs featured in films including Kingpin, Kicking and Screaming, and Heavy.
Through it all, Freedy Johnston has remained what matters most—a songwriter’s songwriter, with an extraordinary ability to turn everyday lives, complicated people, heartache, humor, and small details into songs that feel like little movies.
Now based in Joshua Tree, California, Freedy brings those songs and stories to The Blue Door for a special evening in the kind of room where songwriting takes center stage.
