Explore the art of free-motion machine embroidery and learn how to use your sewing machine needle as a drawing tool to create a beautiful three-dimensional botanical picture.

During this hands-on workshop, you will choose to create either a delicate pansy or a romantic rose, using free-motion stitching to draw the shapes of the petals and leaves directly onto fabric. You will learn how to use different directions, densities and layers of machine stitching to colour and shade the petals, creating depth, movement and botanical detail with thread.

Once your embroidered pieces are complete, you will discover how to transform them into a three-dimensional elements . The individual petals and leaves will be machine wired, carefully shaped and assembled to create a dimensional bloom with natural movement and form.

Your finished flower will then be arranged against a machine-stitched fabric background, creating a unique botanical composition ready to be displayed and framed as a piece of textile art.

During the workshop you will explore:
Using the sewing machine needle as a drawing tool
Free-motion machine embroidery techniques
Creating and stitching realistic petal and leaf shapes
Using machine stitching to colour, shade and add definition
Building texture and dimension with thread
Machine wiring individual petals and leaves
Shaping and assembling embroidered elements into a 3D bloom
Creating a complementary machine-stitched background

This workshop is perfect for anyone who enjoys botanical art, textiles, free-motion embroidery and experimenting with thread as a form of drawing. You will be encouraged to work intuitively, developing your own interpretation of the flower while learning techniques that can be applied to many other botanical subjects.

You will leave with a unique three-dimensional embroidered botanical picture, combining delicate machine-drawn flowers with sculptural petals and leaves, ready to frame and display.
You will need a sewing machine with drop feed dogs, fabrics and basic sewing supplies. Detailed requirements will be emailed to you in advance of the class.
