Where Art, Literacy & Imagination Come Together!
Looking for a fun, free kids activity in Hermosa Beach? Join the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library for a hands-on art + reading workshop where kids and teens will create an original bookmark for the LA County Library Annual Bookmark Contest.
But it’s more than an art project.
Each workshop is thoughtfully designed and led by Viv York, who has created a one-of-a-kind curriculum that brings together art, literature and creative thinking. Kids will explore ideas from books, discover how artists use color, shape and imagery to tell stories, and turn those ideas into artwork of their own.
Along the way, they’ll build reading comprehension, visual literacy, storytelling and creative-thinking skills, without it feeling like school. Some workshops even make surprising connections to fine art, math and nature.

The LA County Library Bookmark Contest is open to:
K–2 • Grades 3–5 • Grades 6–8 • Grades 9–12
Local winners may advance for district recognition, and District 2 winners will also be recognized at a City Council meeting and receive an award.
