The Jazzschool presents free monthly screenings of jazz documentaries in the intimate Maxwell Lounge – with popcorn!Sonny Rollins – Saxophone Colossus (1986), directed by Robert Mugge, documents the life of the late great tenor saxophonist at a pivotal point in his career, when both he and his manager and wife, Lucille, hoped to silence the critics and fans who insisted that his contemporary work was inferior to his classic albums of the 1950s and 60s.
Combining a concert film with a journalistic backstory, the film explores the intimate details of Rollins’ mid-career performances, collaborations, compositions, pre-show rituals, and more.
Notably, the film captures the only recorded performance to date of Rollins’ collaboration with Finnish composer Heikki Sarmanto, Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra, a fascinating piece including one movement inspired by Aaron Copland and another by Caribbean music.
