Keen to get faster at walking? Interested to try out race-walking? Come along to a FREE 10 week ‘Racewalking & Powerwalking 101’ course and learn about the art of walking faster safely. No previous experience required!! We will be starting from scratch and have you setting walk PBs by Christmas.
The coaching portion will be run by Kerris Browne racewalker, previous Racewalking Official, historical coach for Lake City Athletics childrens’ racewalking medalists, and coach to Megan Romanes, our winner of the Rotorua Marathon 2021 in a time of 4:40:52, plus Bieke Kostrewa and Egbert Koekoek who regularly earn placings at walking events. Kerris has earned herself multiple racewalking podiums herself (3rd in 2026 Offroad Half) and will be in Rarotonga again next September defending her 32km title.
HOW??
Improve your walking pace with shorter, quicker steps, soft knees, relaxed arm drive and a quiet foot placement closer beneath your body. Suitable for fitness walkers, people returning to exercise, hikers and endurance athletes
Is Racewalking or Powerwalking difficult?
NO! Like running, faster walking is physically strenuous. But according to research, runners hit the ground with as much as 4 x’s their body weight per stride, whereas race walkers, who do not leave the ground, generate only about 1.4 x’s their body weight with each step. So in saying that…..it is a lot less harsh on your body.
Is fast walking good exercise?
YES! Health professionals agree that faster walking is GREAT low-impact and cardiovascular exercise.
Is faster walking hard on your joints?
Proper technique means that both Racewalking and Powerwalking have evolved into a very fluid, smooth and enjoyable way to walk that actually puts LESS strain on your joints. And it burns more calories per km than general walking!
Is faster walking fun?
YES! I have been racewalking and powerwalking for many years, and the walking competitiveness at parkrun is great!!
Can I get faster?
Absolutely! Once you learn how to prevent the front leg from ‘braking’, you will be off. Very average runners, can become outstanding racewalkers!
Will I look like ‘Cath and Kim’?
Yes….hopefully! But we will all look the same so don’t worry 😊
