zerOclassikal's celebrated Free Flow Classikal concept returns to Karamel as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, with an exceptional lineup featuring violinist Preetha Narayanan, Dhanraj Pandey on tabla, and guitarist Justin Quinn, who performs alongside renowned sitarist Jonathan Mayer for the first time since The Teak Project.
This edition of Free Flow Classikal brings together some of London's finest improvising musicians to explore the rich and expressive worlds of raag and taal. Join us for a moving exploration of South Asian Classical music through the medium of free improvisation, across music genres perspective-ed from south Asian classical forms. No boundaries. No limits!"
Jonathan Mayer, son of the late Kolkata composer John Mayer, is a renowned sitarist & composer, who has composed extensively for many genres including jazz, Indian, dance & symphonic writing and has performed all over the world, and two very successful tours in India. He began his musical training at just 5 years old, learning violin from his grandfather Albert Hepton, piano from James Methuen-Campbell and composition from his father, and later mastered the sitar. His ability to read Western notation has allowed him to perform in a variety of genres – playing with artists such as Orlando Consort, The London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra, among other notable names. He is also the Artistic Director of zerOclassikal.
Justin Quinn is a UK-based guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer & producer. His genre-hopping approach to music-making has found him working with Florence + The Machine, Lianne La Havas, Ibrahim Maalouf, Gary Barlow, Elton John, Michael Bublé, Seal, Chrissie Hynde, Jools Holland, Jack Bruce & Billy Cobham, as well as collaborations with classical Indian musicians, Irish trad players, jazz artists and countless UK orchestras including The LSO, Sinfonia of London. His debut album Before I Forget in 2005 was named Jazz Album of the Year by MOJO magazine. He is a winner of an Oliver Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music with the band of Come From Away, and a BBC Jazz Award for Innovation with the F-ire Collective. His solo releases include: Before I Forget, The Teak Project and multiple EPs with Art-Rock duo The Wealden.
Preetha Narayanan is a violinist, composer and educator whose work bridges cultures, musical traditions and artistic disciplines. Merging Western and Indian Classical training with a wide range of influences from her collaborations and research, Preetha is sought after for her distinctive voice and unique sound. Preetha has performed internationally with artists including Anoushka Shankar, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh OBE, Kae Tempest and the London Contemporary Orchestra, among others. She is the co-founder of genre-defying string duo Balladeste ("...an extraordinary and beautiful listening experience" Folk Radio UK) who write and perform original music. More recently, Preetha has been composing works for orchestra and ensembles, and touring her own work.
Dhanraj Persaud began his training at the age of 14 and follows the playing style of the Jaipur and Farukkhabad gharanas of tabla. Not only is Dhanraj an accomplished tabla player but also an experienced vocalist. Dhanraj has performed extensively around the UK and is fast becoming a much sought-after performer within the Indian classical music scene in this country. With zerOclassikal, Dhanraj has performed as part of Back to the Lounge: Baithak Sessions at Rich Mix London and Music in the Museum at Wardown House, Museum and Gallery in Luton.
