Coreset welcomes audiences to a rehearsed reading of ‘41’, a new play in development by local playwright Joss Birkett, directed by Geoff Readman.
The play tells the story of the bombing of Newark-on-Trent’s Ransome and Marles ball-bearing factory on Friday 7 March 1941, bringing together true stories of those who experienced the attack and its aftermath.
‘41’ will be performed as a dramatic reading, with the cast performing script-in-hand.
The Play
‘41’ moves between two timelines.
In 1941, a family in Newark-on-Trent is making do with the quiet routines of wartime life. The town has learned to live with the uncertainty of the war, but no one is expecting the enemy planes that will arrive and devastate the market town.
In 2026, a museum curator prepares to give a talk about the Home Front. As she explores the familiar idea of the “Blitz Spirit”, uncomfortable truths about life during the Second World War begin to challenge her nostalgic vision.
Combining the true stories of survivors, ‘41’ explores the gap between how wartime experience is remembered and what it was actually like to live through conflict.
