What can America’s First Ladies teach us about leadership without formal authority? The First Lady occupies one of the most unusual positions in American public life: highly visible and influential, yet unelected and without formally defined responsibilities.
In 1776, Abigail Adams famously urged her husband John to “remember the ladies.” In the 250 years since, First Ladies have used their unique platforms in very different ways—championing causes, influencing public conversations, challenging expectations, and helping shape American culture and civic life.
This Community Conversation will use the experiences of recent First Ladies as a starting point for a broader discussion about women, leadership, influence, and public service. With guests who have had a front-row seat to multiple presidential administrations, we’ll explore how First Ladies have navigated expectations and opportunity—and consider what their experiences can teach us about using our own voices and influence to strengthen our communities.
