About Dr Rhonda Sapp & HEAL- Baltimore
Dr. Rhonda Sapp’s path into acupuncture began as a patient in 1994. In March 1995, she sustained a severe brain injury that resulted in a 30-day coma. Although her physicians predicted significant long-term limitations, she recovered far more completely than expected. Because she had already been receiving acupuncture before the injury, she came to believe that it had played an important role in her body’s ability to recover. That experience ultimately inspired her to become an acupuncturist herself.

Dr. Sapp graduated from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute (TAI) in 1999, where she received the Herbert C Brown Award for Community Service. Soon after graduation, she began providing auricular acupuncture at the Baltimore City Women’s Detention Center for ACT-SAP clients and went on to work at Penn North Recovery, Recovery In Community, and other addiction-recovery and community acupuncture programs. In these settings, she did more than provide treatment: she taught and supervised TAI/Tai Sophia/MUIH students as they learned to administer auricular acupuncture in real-world community settings. At the same time, she established her private practice, About Chi Acupuncture, which served Baltimore City from 1999 through 2011.

In 2011, Dr. Sapp became Associate Director of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Programs at Tai Sophia Institute, later the Maryland University of Integrative Health, where she remained through 2018. Her work included graduate-level academic programming, curriculum development, program evaluation, accreditation support, and student success. She also continued supervising community health initiatives and student clinical training in underserved settings. Her resume reflects additional graduate education in health promotion and Oriental medicine, along with longstanding credentials in auricular acupuncture and addiction counseling.
In 2019, she founded and directed Better! Acupuncture Health Care and was also recruited to serve as Director of Acupuncture and Holistic Services at Penn North Recovery, where she remained through 2024. There, she directed integrative services in a harm-reduction environment serving more than 300 clients each week, supervised clinicians, interns, and volunteers, developed trauma-informed treatment protocols, and helped build partnerships among recovery programs, community health organizations, and educational institutions. Her broader career has included work in pain, cancer support, chronic conditions, trauma-informed care, public speaking, faculty leadership, and advocacy for expanded access to acupuncture.
In October 2025, Dr. Sapp founded HEAL-Baltimore Inc. — Health Equity through Acupuncture and Learning, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to effective acupuncture and integrative health services for the broader community, with particular attention to people affected by pain, trauma, cancer, chronic stress, and health inequity. HEAL initially planned to grow gradually, but those plans changed dramatically after a fire displaced the organization. HEAL found refuge at the Church of the Messiah, where increased space and an unexpected opportunity to serve more of the public allowed the organization’s clinical and community programs to expand much more quickly than originally envisioned. Today, Dr. Sapp leads HEAL-Baltimore’s clinical programming, community partnerships, education, outreach, and development of sustainable models that make high-quality acupuncture accessible across income levels and communities.
Rhonda is a resident of Arcadia in Northeast Baltimore, just 8 minutes from HEAL-BMore. She lives there with her husband David, son Elijah, her dog Scruffy and cat Keekee.
