Our favorite collaboration is back! Join La Maison Française of NYU in partnership with Maison Française of Columbia to present the 2026 edition of Francophone Films in Harlem. We will be hosting program #4 details here:

Les gardiennes du fleuve (Guardians of the River), 2025, Hassanie Mahomat Ibrahim, 13’, Doc., Niger, Burkina Faso.

Dans les rues de Niamey, des femmes se battent pour leur survie et leur dignité, les takakoyos. Amina, 75 ans et ses compagnons de tous âges ont quitté leurs villages en quête d'une vie meilleure. Malgré la pauvreté qui pourrait les pousser à la mendicité, elles refusent de tendre la main. Armées de tasses de sables sur les épaules le Takala, elles parcourent la ville, à la recherche de leur pitance. Sans le savoir, en extrayant le sable du fleuve Niger leur travail, est essentiel pour la protection de l'environnement du fleuve.

In the streets of Niamey, a group of women known as the *takakoyos* fight for their survival and dignity. Amina, 75, and her companions, who range in age from young to old—have left their villages in search of a better life. Despite the poverty that might otherwise drive them to beg, they refuse to hold out their hands for charity. Armed with cups of sand balanced on their shoulders—a load known as the *Takala*they traverse the city in search of their daily sustenance. Unbeknownst to them, by extracting sand from the Niger River, their labor plays an essential role in protecting the river's environment.

Dans un village des montagnes Béjaouï, dans le nord de l’Algérie, Nouria rencontre Abdel, un Français, qui vit et travaille dans ce pays depuis quelques mois. Suite à un pari perdu, les deux jeunes gens prennent la route en mobylettes le long de la côte méditerranéenne. Leur but : embarquer sur un bateau qui les ramènera en France.

In a village in the Béjaïa mountains of northern Algeria, Nouria meets Abdel—a Frenchman who has been living and working in the country for a few months. Following a lost bet, the two young people hit the road on mopeds, traveling along the Mediterranean coast. Their goal: to board a boat that will take them back to France.

Noce d’eau, (Water Wedding) 2025, Auriette Jioya, 20’, Fiction, Bénin 

Kémi, jeune Français d'origine béninoise, découvre une vieille photo de la maison familiale de son grand-père au Bénin, devenue un gîte. Il décide de la réserver pour un week-end avec des amis, espérant en apprendre plus sur ses origines. La rencontre d'Angèle, une mystérieuse jeune femme qui prétend connaître son grand-père Sourou va bouleverser leur séjour.

Kémi, a young Frenchman of Beninese descent, discovers an old photograph of his grandfather’s family home in Benin—which has since been converted into a guesthouse. He decides to book it for a weekend getaway with friends, hoping to learn more about his roots. However, his encounter with Angèle—a mysterious young woman who claims to have known his grandfather, Sourou—turns their stay completely upside down.

A travers de rapide sketchs, Indépendance Tchatcha offre une immersion dans la vie quotidienne d’afrodescendants de tous horizons, que ce soit au sein d’une famille africaine au passé polygame, dans les bureaux d’une grande entreprise en manque de “diversité” ou encore dans une relation amoureuse basé sur la fétichisation.

Le ton mêle satire, sarcasme et humour social, avec la volonté constante de transformer les tragédies silencieuses en métaphores comiques.

Through a series of rapid-fire sketches, *Indépendance Tchatcha* offers an immersion into the daily lives of people of African descent from all walks of life—whether within an African family with a polygamous past, in the offices of a major corporation lacking in “diversity,” or in a romantic relationship rooted in fetishization.

The tone blends satire, sarcasm, and social humor, driven by a constant desire to transform silent tragedies into comedic metaphors.


Toubab, 2025, Marie-Sybille Loutan & Valentine Coral, 11’, Fiction, Switzerland.

Omar et Kevin, deux jeunes hommes issus des cités, décident de braquer une épicerie de quartier. Alors qu'ils prennent la fuite, ils volent une voiture à bord de laquelle se trouve un bébé, bouleversant ainsi totalement leurs plans.

Omar and Kevin, two young men from the projects decide to hold up a local grocery store. As they’re making their escape, they steal a car with a baby inside, causing a major disruption to their plans
