An in-conversation with Lesley Samms on Frances' book, in anticipation of her new exhibition at the Royal Society of Arts
About this Event

Join us for an intimate evening in conversation with acclaimed British painter Frances Featherstone, whose distinctive interiors have captivated collectors and critics alike. This in-conversation with renowned artist Frances Featherstone kicks off the Private View of her new exhibition at the Royal Society of Arts' Muse Bar.

Through her series From the Perspective of the Angels, Frances Featherstone explores bedrooms and private domestic spaces in an honest and profound way. At once contemplative and quietly powerful, her work invites us to reconsider what it means to be at home — not as a site of obligation or overwork, but as a space of reflection, autonomy, and emotional depth.

This conversation will explore:

• The domestic interior in the history of women’s painting
• Stillness as a form of contemporary resistance
• The tension between analogue craft and digital culture
• Solitude, freedom, and the politics of modern life
• How beauty and intimacy can counterbalance overstimulation

Whether you are a collector, artist, curator, or simply someone drawn to thoughtful contemporary painting, this evening offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from an artist whose work speaks profoundly to our moment in time.

Each talk ticket includes a welcome drink and the possibility of ordering a signed copy of Frances Featherstone’s beautifully produced book, From the Perspective of the Angels.

Tickets include:

  • A glass of alcoholic or non-alcholic wine/fizz/beer/soft drink
  • 5£ discount on the book purchase if book admission selected

This event will be followed by the exhibition opening for her newest show at the RSA's Muse Bar. Tickets for this event include access to the .

Frances Featherstone

Frances Featherstone is a multi-award winning artist. She has a BA (Hons) Degree (1st Class) in Fine Art from the University of the West of England, Bristol. Her studio is in Groombridge just outside Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

She works predominantly in oil paints. Guided by an appreciation for storytelling, narratives serve at the heart of her work, with which she seeks to fill her paintings with ideas and conceptual depth. At present, her creative explorations revolve around the interplay between figures and interior spaces, offering viewers a window into our intimate emotions that are entangled with the spaces that we occupy. Quite often in her work the figure sits reading or lost in thought and is both an object in the space but also the subject that gives it meaning. As Gaston Bachelard says, ‘Inhabited space transcends geometric space’.

Frances worked at the BBC as a Senior Designer for many years, and this has influenced her way of seeing, emphasising composition and design. She has found in her work that the ordinary can become fascinating by simply changing the perspective. She employs aerial perspectives to craft patterns seen from above that compress and flatten the spatial dimensions. These pieces venture beyond the constraints of conventional perception and seek to challenge our normal sense of space.
