About this Event

What do rooms do to bodies? How do objects hold identity and memory? And how do institutions organise power?

Four Windows and a Room is a spatial installation drawing on an eight-year correspondence with Keith, a man held in solitary confinement in the United States. Through letters, footage, objects and rooms, the installation explores how we encounter another person’s experience.

1 Mattress. 2 Sheets, 5 Small Bars of Yellow State Soap. A Toothbrush. A Bible.

This was the inventory Keith gave me of what was in his "room", the 5x9 cell in which he spent 23 hours a day, for 25 years.

As I travelled through the States on my way to visit him, I encountered many rooms with similar objects.

I'm joined for the evening by criminologist and leading Pr*son design expert Yvonne Jewkes and Professor of Film Janet Harbord to explore how architecture can constrain or support the self, how people make meaning through the things around them, and what separates a room of confinement from a place of safety or belonging.
