Focus on Festivals: Film Programming and Curation in Practice @BFI Stephen Street
Do you love films? Are you interested in bringing the world's best moving images to audiences? Would you like to hear about some of the ways in which you could use your passion to build a career?
Graduates of our , run in partnership with the BFI, work in a wide range of roles in film festivals, online platforms, cinemas, distribution companies, archives and publishing. This conversation between festival professional Elle Haywood, and NFTS course leader and festival consultant Sandra Hebron will explore the practicalities, pleasures and challenges of working in this dynamic cultural field.
Elle Haywood is an experienced film festival professional, working in a range of world-leading organisations in the programming and exhibition sector for the past eight years across the U.K. and Canada. Recently appointed as Industry Manager at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, she previously worked at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as a film and talent coordinator for the 50th anniversary edition. She has also worked at the BFI on national youth creative funding programmes, and at Hot Docs, Sundance: London and the Cambridge Film Festival. Her interests include promoting international and independent cinema, and advocating for diverse, intersectional and sustainable industry practices. She is an alum of the Film Studies, Programming and Curation MFA at the NFTS.
Sandra Hebron has had a long career in independent cinema and festival curation and management in the UK, Europe and East Asia, including as BFI Head of Festivals (2003-2011). She moderates filmmaker talks and industry panels in a wide range of settings and recently curated the BFI’s Frederick Wiseman retrospective.
