Learn the art of Shibori while creating this fun fish windsock with local artist Kathleen Goddu. Shibori is referred to as “Squeeze” in Japan. Shibori comes from the verb “shiboru” which means “to wring, squeeze and press” in Japanese. It is a dye resist process of stitching, folding and clamping, wrapping fabric around a pole, plaiting, etc.
Sekka is a fold and clamp shibori technique and I will share a little about Japanese Sekka, what it is, how it is done, and the variables about the process. The instructor will demonstrate two different folds and then participants will begin fabric preparation. Each participant will prepare two pieces fabric measuring 12” x 24” that will be used to sew a fish wind sock from the pattern provided.
The attendees need to bring the following:
• Dishwashing gloves
• Apron or old clothes and shoes
• Scissors: for use on paper and fabric
• Straight pins if you have them or clips
• Thread
• Note taking materials
All other materials will be supplied including the indigo vat, fabric, sewing machine, pattern, and more.
Class size: 5 minimum, 8 max
This class is planned to be outdoors under tents
Kathleen Goddu lives and creates her art in Brunswick, Me. She has been practicing the fabric arts of shibori and sashiko for almost two decades, and shows her work locally amidst the vibrant Maine art scene. Her work illustrates a love of nature she gained as a child growing up near Little Sebago Lake.
With a degree in art and speech pathology Kathleen spent most of her 24-year career helping others find their voice. In 2000, she discovered a calling to express her own through Japanese textile art forms. Kathleen hosts workshops when she can, teaching and sharing her love of shibori and sashiko.
