Glow-worms are a well known example of bioluminescence - but did you know that fungi, plants and other invertebrates can glow too?
Whilst bioluminescence is hard to find in the UK - other invertebrates, plants, and fungi glow in a different way. They don’t produce their own light, as glow-worms do, but they exhibit biofluorescence instead.
When a UV light is shone on some species, they absorb the light and reemit it back as a different colour!
We will head into the woods and shine a light on how fascinating mother nature is! The paths are relatively flat but can become muddy in some areas.
Join us on a walk led by Dr Megan Gardner-Purchase, a young environmental scientist with a passion for uncovering the hidden side of nature. At the University of Warwick, she studies the microscopic organisms, fungi, mosses and lichens that shape the ecosystems around us. She loves helping people discover the strange and surprising things hiding in plain sight, from glowing fungi to the invisible life beneath our feet.
We will meet at car park 8a ( w3w ///vows.tanks.couple ) at 18:30 by benches /infront of the Warwick Innovation District building. See FAQ for parking payment information.
No previous experience or knowledge is needed. Wear suitable clothes and footwear for the weather and bring a torch if you have one! After reserving your spot keep an eye on your emails for updates and extra information.
