CASTLEWOOD HISTORY
Castlewood is one of the most architecturally significant historic homes in Chesterfield, VA and its history is every bit as fascinating as its reputation. Castlewood occupies land that was originally patented to Henry Winfree in 1754 and remained in the Winfree family until 1816, when Parke Poindexter (Clerk of the Chesterfield County Court) purchased 180 acres. The historic Federal-style mansion was built on land that once served as a Revolutionary War encampment and has witnessed more than two centuries of Virginia history. Over the years, Castlewood has served as a private residence, a Methodist parsonage, a bank, and now a treasured historic site preserved by The Chesterfield Historical Society.
But beyond its history, Castlewood has also gained a reputation for unexplained activity, with visitors reporting mysterious footsteps, voices, and other strange occurrences within its walls. According to historical accounts, the child suffered severe burns after his clothing caught fire from candles on the family's Christmas tree.
