In 1925 Kentucky, ambitious cave explorer Floyd Collins ventures underground in search of a discovery that could change his family’s fortunes. When he becomes trapped deep beneath the earth, a desperate rescue effort quickly grows into a national media sensation, drawing reporters, tourists, and opportunists to the site as the line between human tragedy and public spectacle begins to disappear.
Puddletown Theatre Collective presents Adam Guettel and Tina Landau’s Floyd Collins as a staged concert reading in the cavernous sanctuary of First Congregational United Church of Christ. Featuring a live chamber orchestra and an ensemble of Portland artists, this intimate, atmospheric presentation places Guettel’s soaring score and the extraordinary true story at its center.
At once deeply personal and strikingly contemporary, Floyd Collins is a story of family, faith, ambition, isolation, and what happens when one man’s suffering becomes everyone else’s entertainment.
