Restoring Resilience: The Miller Creek Story
Film by: Josie Harris
Presented by: Clark Fork Coalition and Missoula Conservation District
Partnerships between government agencies, non-profit organizations, and landowners in the Miller Creek watershed have begun to restore the stream and its riparian corridor to address the damages caused by past management. These efforts cumulatively are making a big difference that will build resilience across the landscape for generations to come.
Working Water: Innovating agriculture for a resilient future
Filmmaker: Jon Catton
Presented by: Montana DNRC and Montana Water Center
In Montana, agriculture is woven into our history, our culture, and our economy, and it is inextricably linked to how water flows through our watersheds. As farmers and ranchers experience increasing water scarcity, they are innovating their irrigation practices to build resilience – for themselves and to benefit the lands and waters that surround them. All Montanans have a stake in the changes being explored.
Restoring the Headwaters
Directed by: Tom Attwater
Presented by: Big Hole Watershed Committee
At the “headwaters of the headwaters” of the Missouri River lies Smith-Sage Springs, a mesic wetland in Montana’s Big Hole Valley. This short documentary highlights a wetland restoration project led by the Big Hole Watershed Committee to stabilize a headcut and restore the health of this important landscape.
Smith-Sage Springs supports wildlife such as pronghorn, elk, and Greater sage-grouse while acting as a natural sponge that holds clean, cold water and releases it into the Big Hole River and the Missouri River Basin year-round.
But over time, a headcut began slowly eating away at the wetland, drying out the landscape.
When local biologists and the landowner noticed the change, they knew it was time to act. Partners led by the Big Hole Watershed Committee launched a years-long restoration effort to stabilize the headcut and restore the health of Smith-Sage Springs for wildlife, for the rancher, and for everyone downstream.
This film highlights the collaborative conservation work taking place at the headwaters of a major river system and the importance of protecting wetlands in the Big Hole Valley.
