About this Event
This year’s Black History Month theme, Honouring Our Communities, is at the heart of this tour, celebrating the people, businesses and food traditions that have helped shape Tooting.
Led by Geoff Simmons (Planet Tooting) and Chantelle Bent (Chantelle’s Community Kitchen), the tour will take you through one of South London’s most culturally diverse neighbourhoods, meeting the people behind some of Tooting’s much-loved African and Caribbean food businesses.
Along the way, you’ll visit a selection of local restaurants, bakeries, cafés and food businesses, including Kimmie’s Jerk Joint, Chagos Bar, ENU Ethiopian and Eritrean Kitchen , Kenkey, Sunyani, Sunshine, Minerva, Ital Vital and Mixed Blessings Bakery.
Hear from the chefs, cooks and business owners themselves as they share the stories behind their food, their heritage and the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
And, of course, there will be plenty to taste. You’ll have the opportunity to sample a range of African and Caribbean dishes while discovering more about the culinary traditions that are deeply rooted in Tooting. So come hungry and bring your tupperware!
Tasters include: Oxtail, jerk chicken, rice & peas, guinness punch, mini patties, homemade peanut butter candy, Ital soup, jerk & bbq wings and saltfish fritters.
More than a food tour, this is a celebration of food, culture, heritage and community – and an opportunity to honour the people and businesses whose stories are part of Tooting’s rich cultural identity.
