Five weeks of Abbas Kiarostami: Through the Olive Trees (1994, Iran)🗓 Thursday, October 15 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
The Koker Trilogy closes with a film about the making of the previous one. During the shoot of And Life Goes On, a young, illiterate stonemason cast as a newlywed husband is secretly in love with the young woman playing his screen wife - who, off camera, won't speak to him at all. Kiarostami turns a small, awkward real-life romance into a meditation on cinema's strange power to bring people together against their will.
The film's famous final shot - a single, minutes-long take following a tiny figure racing across a hillside through olive groves - has become one of the most analyzed endings in world cinema, precisely because Kiarostami refuses to tell you what it means.
"Brilliantly made, irresistibly touching."
- Susan Sontag, Artforum
"An ineffably lovely, gentle human comedy steeped in the folkways of Iranian village life."
- The Criterion Collection
