Five weeks of Abbas Kiarostami: Taste of Cherry (1997, Iran)
🗓 Thursday, October 22 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi) drives slowly around the dusty hills outside Tehran, looking for someone willing to accept a strange, well-paid job: check on him the following morning, and if he's dead, bury him. He picks up a soldier, a seminary student, and finally an old taxidermist, each of whom offers Badii a different reason to reconsider — and Kiarostami leaves the answer entirely in the audience's hands.
The first Iranian film to win the Palme d'Or, and one of the most divisive: some critics found it a slow, monumental achievement, others found it maddening. Either way, it's essential Kiarostami, and its unconventional, fourth-wall-breaking final minutes are still argued over decades later.
"A richly ambiguous character study with an impressively ambitious thematic scale."
— Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus
"Simultaneously epic and precisely minuscule."
— Stephen Holden, The New York Times
