Crash course into River Fishing, reading the water, understand the gear, and Identifying your fish and how to handle them with care!
I did not teach myself to fish. A guy named Dan Leung took me under his wing and spent years teaching me how to read a river, think like a fish, and on fly, float, or twiching a jig on the Vedder and the Chehalis. This is me handing that on.
WHAT WE COVER IN TWO AND A HALF HOURS
The licence you actually need, and why most people buy the wrong one. How to read the regulations instead of a forum post. One rod, one reel, one box, and what to skip. How to look at a run and know where the fish are sitting. How to identify what you have caught and hold it so it swims away. And wading safety, including the belt that is still sitting in your waders box unused.
Everyone builds a float rig from bare line at the tables. You take it home.
WHO THIS IS FOR
People who have never fished a river, and people coming back to it after ten or fifteen years away. No experience needed. No gear needed. If you have never held a rod, you are exactly who this is for.
PRIZES
There is gear on the table from local shops, and it is won, not drawn. Fastest correct rig tied at the table, best read of a run from a photograph, best score on fish identification. Nobody is buying a raffle ticket here. For BC lottery reasons.
WHERE THE MONEY GOES
Every dollar of ticket revenue, after Eventbrite's fee, goes to the Steelhead Society of British Columbia. Registered charity, founded in 1970 by anglers, working on wild fish and wild rivers ever since. Their office is at 1140 Austin Avenue. We are at 1126. It is a four door walk, and I am going to make it with a cheque and a camera, and post the photo so you can see I didnt go further to Searun Tackle with it!
I cover the room and the coffee myself.
Read this next part before you buy. This is a ticketed event, not a registered charity, so there is no tax receipt for anybody. What you get instead is the total announced in this room on the night, posted publicly that week, and a photograph of the cheque with the amount on it. If that is not good enough for you, do not buy a ticket, and I will not take it personally.
Bring somebody who has always wanted to try this and never had anyone to ask.
