Presenter: Dr. Julie HernandezPeople will make up their minds and change them, often in response to the persuasive attempts of others. However, there are conditions under which people resist changing their mind, even when confronted with evidence that they should. RVC Professor of Psychology Julie Hernandez will explain why people are so resistant to changing their minds. She will discuss the importance of personal and social identity, the need for belonging, and the self-protection motive as factors that are essential to understanding this resistance. She will use psychological theories of persuasion, reactance, and cognitive dissonance to further explain. Finally, Dr. Hernandez will consider the implications of people’s resistance to their ability to learn, engage in social discourse, and recognize truth.
The First Tuesday Lecture Series will be held in the Stenstrom Student Center Atrium on Main Campus, streamed online, and made available later as a recording on our YouTube Channel.
