Presenter: Dr. Liz BrownThe presentation will explore the role of guided running in creating accessibility, independence, and community for athletes with visual impairments. Through the lecturer’s personal experiences guiding a blind runner in races, insights will be shared into the communication, trust, preparation, and teamwork required between runner and guide. The lecture highlights how adaptive athletics organizations such as Achilles International help individuals with disabilities participate fully in sports and social communities, emphasizing that accessibility extends far beyond physical spaces. Without guides and community support, many visually impaired athletes are limited to indoor treadmills or excluded from outdoor running, whether in competitive races or everyday training, entirely. By increasing awareness and encouraging community involvement, more individuals can help expand accessibility and create opportunities for athletes with visual impairments to fully participate in the running community.
The First Tuesday Lecture Series will be held in the Stenstrom Student Center Atrium on Main Campus, streamed online, and made available later as a recording on our YouTube Channel.
