Bring your cameras and join wildlife photographers on a First Day Hike to start the New Year. This will be a fairly easy, family-friendly walk for photographers of all levels and for non-photographers too. We will be scanning as we walk, to point out wildlife and landscape shots, and hopefully, we will even see some cool wild mushrooms to photograph. We will be giving tips on how to use the light to your advantage and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Hope to see you there!
The Maidu Trail, a 3-mile loop, is mostly paved, level hiking. However, some sections are natural surfaces with loose gravel and cobble. There are a few short, steep climbs. The trail is a mix of sun and shade. The trail is not suitable for a wheelchair or stroller. Water and restrooms are available at the start/end of the hike and at the approximate 1-mile point.
Dogs are not allowed on the First Day Hike. As with all areas of the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, poison oak and ticks are present, sometimes immediately adjacent to trails. Please pack out all trash. Garbage receptacles are available at the start/end of the hike.
The hike will start at the Folsom Historic Powerhouse at 9980 Greenback Lane. The State Parks parking fee will be waived for registered First Day Hikers.
When hiking, it is always best to dress in layers and wear sturdy hiking shoes and a hat. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and plenty of water. Binoculars are a plus!
