About this Event
Discover how conservation professionals use prescribed (also called controlled) burning and cutting-edge technology to restore and protect Virginia's natural landscapes. Join us for an engaging look at the science behind prescribed burning, the specialized equipment used to safely conduct burns, and the critical role fire plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems and wildlife habitat.
Weather permitting (and barring any issues from CHO), you'll get an up-close look and live demonstration of a fire drone (without the fire) and how this technology is helping land managers conduct prescribed burns more efficiently, safely and effectively.
Where? Fernbrook Natural Area Preserve
Rain Date: in case of inclement weather or issues from the CHO airport regarding airspace and drones, we'll move this demonstration to Sunday, November 8 from 3-4 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public.
We'll send additional details and reminders about a week before the event.
The Nature Conservancy uses prescribed burns to mimic natural fires that shaped the landscape over 10,000 years, creating a diverse ecosystem of open woodlands, young forest and shady old-growth.
