The story of a girl from a Devon family who became Elizabeth 1’s closest confidante
Appointed serving gentlewoman to Henry VIII’s younger daughter in 1536, Katherine Champernowne, later the wife of John Astley, was arguably the most important person in young Elizabeth’s life. She is known to fans of Tudor history as Kat Ashley.
Author and speaker Rosemary Griggs has been delving into Devon’s history for years.
Queen Elizabeth 1’s Governess: The Real Kat Ashley, marks a departure from Rosemary’s historical fiction works. Rosemary maps Kat’s career in the first comprehensive, dedicated non-fiction biography, to step out of Elizabeth’s shadow and put Kat centre stage
