About the film:
When an arranged marriage brings Ada (Holly Hunter) and her spirited daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) to the storm-lashed coast of nineteenth-century New Zealand, Ada finds herself locked in a battle of wills between her controlling husband (Sam Neill) and a rugged frontiersman (Harvey Keitel) to whom she develops a deep yet forbidden attraction. Jane Campion’s magnificently lyrical The Piano took the movie world by storm, winning not only the 1993 Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, but also Academy Awards® for Hunter (Best Actress) and Paquin (Best Supporting Actress), as well as the Best Original Screenplay Oscar® for writer-director Jane Campion. One of the cinema’s great romantic dramas and a startlingly sensual visual experience, The Piano has been fully restored for the big screen by Campion and cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh in this stunning new 4K version, created from the original camera negative.
“Great art is immediately accessible, having a powerful simplicity that speaks to anyone who cares to listen. The Piano is great art.” – Rick Groen, Toronto Globe and Mail
