In the Moravian village of Nesovice the Nazis are moving out ahead of advancing Soviet forces. 12-yr-old Olda, cruelly nicknamed ‘Midget’, interacts with both sets of militia sometimes on friendly terms and sometimes not, but without any sense of partisanship. He takes things as they come, including the regular beatings from his embittered father and the bullying at the hands of boys from richer families, knowing he has the guile and chops to survive and sustained by the kindness of his mother and of local misfit Cyril. Anyway, he’s more concerned about the theft of his beloved horse Julinka to take much notice of the momentous events swirling around him.Anyone seeing this film for the first time will surely recognise it as a counterpart to Ken Loach’s Kes, and as an uncelebrated masterpiece of European cinema. Images of astonishing monochrome beauty tumble continuously from the screen as Olda navigates his way through an adult world of chaos and confusion, counteracting reality with an imagination in which he is a mini superhero.
