Join us for a rare screening of the 1955 film "French Cancan," directed by Jean Renoir, son of Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. This visually stunning comedy-drama in full Technicolor is a loving fantasy impression of the characters and artists of the Belle Époque period in Montmartre and depicts the founding of the Moulin Rouge in Paris. With a luxurious saturated palette, the film captures the joie de vivre of Impressionist paintings. Legendary French movie star Jean Gabin gives one of his most affable performances, and the dance sequences are exhilarating. French Cancan is presented in tribute to VMFA’s special exhibition "The Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse from the Dallas Museum of Art." (1 hr, 42 min; not rated but probably PG-13)
